Dolphins Hold Undefeated Chanticleers To A Draw

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team (4-1-1) earned its first draw of the season against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-0-1), after keeping a hard fought game scoreless through two overtime periods.

The start of the first period was heavily controlled by JU, as four different Dolphins attempted a shot in the first 15 minutes of play to threaten the Chanticleers early. At the 19:38 mark Coastal Carolina responded with back-to-back shots that were saved by starting goalkeeper, Courtney Green, to keep the game scoreless. After the scoring attempts halted for ten minutes, freshman Selma Fohrer took the last shot of the half, but was unable to give the Dolphins its first lead. Zeros for both teams remained on the scoreboard going into halftime.

After returning to the field, the second period began in opposite fashion as the Chanticleers attempted two shots in the first five minutes. Fohrer immediately answered with two shots for the Dolphins, both attempts were saved by Coastal Carolina's goalkeeper. Green tallied two more saves as well, once the Chanticleers fired two more shots for a chance to get onto the board, but were unsuccessful. Late in the period the Chanticleers began to establish more dominance on offense, the team rattled off three more shots and held the Dolphins to zero attempts. However, the Dolphins defense was able to prevent Coastal Carolina from scoring as the final whistle blew, and the match headed into a sudden death overtime period.

The first 10 minute overtime period was a back-and-forth affair. Senior Anna Remensnyder took the first shot at the 92:26 mark, but the ball fell into the hands of the Chanticleers goalkeeper to keep the game going. Throughout the next six minutes, the ball saw action all over the field until the Chanticleers offense picked back up to press the Dolphins. However, the JU defense remained forceful as two more shots by Coastal Carolina were deflected to keep the score at zero as the clock ran out, forcing a second overtime period.

Remensnyder repeated her actions in the beginning of the second, as she launched the ball toward the goal at the 101:52 mark. The remainder of the game grew silent as neither team attempted any shots and the ball continued to make its way across both sides of the field. Once the clock hit 110 minutes, the game officially resulted in a draw after each team was unsuccessful in making a presence on the scoreboard.

"I thought our players were outstanding and battled hard against a good, well established program," head coach John Constable said. "Tonight I don't think many people would have given us a chance and I think this shows how we are moving and progressing as a team."

Last time the Dolphins ended a contest in a tie after two extra periods was against Stetson during the spring 2021 season. This marks the second draw that has occurred under Constable's instruction. Additionally, this is also the Chanticleers first draw of the season, after the program came into the contest with two victories and no losses.

"It feels really good to get the draw because we were definitely the underdogs in the competition," Remensnyder said. "The game was really competitive and overall we are happy with the result."

JU returns to Southern Oak Stadium one more time this weekend to face Alabama A&M (0-3-1) on Sunday, Sept. 5. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET. The match is sponsored by Papa John's Pizza in honor of National Pizza Day and fans are encouraged to arrive early and grab a free slice of pizza before game time.
