BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two Dolphins shot par or better and Jacksonville University women's golf sits T5 after the first day of the Hoover Invitational.
Freshman
Casey Powell sits in sixth overall after a second round 71, and
Jenna Fonda's first round 72 helped her to T15 through the first two rounds.
Fonda got the day started on the right note, with her steadily consistent first round. She shot an even par 72, sitting T2 after the first 18 holes. Her first five holes of the day were pars, and she added two birdies on the back nine.
Powell bounced back after a tough couple early holes, and parred all but one hole on the 10th through the 18th holes. As she wrapped up on the front-nine, she sank back-to-back birdies, and carried that momentum into the second round.
Twelve of his first 14 holes of the second round were pars, with one of the others a birdie. As she came to the end of the day, she once again birdied the same two holes consecutively that she did in the first round to secure her first collegiate round under par.
Frantiska Lunackova hit 12 pars and a birdie in the first round, and tacked on three more birdies in the second round. She is T28 heading into the final round.
Macarena Aguilera also had 12 pars and a birdie in the first round, following that up with two more birdies in the second 18.
Mawgan Vater settled in for her second round, making 15 pars in the round.
Competing as an individual, no one was better on the team on Par-5s than
Debra Ann Burdeshaw. She shot 2-under on the long holes for the day, good for the third best score in the field on those holes.
The Dolphins were the best team on Par-3s on the day, shooting a combined +2, paced by Fonda's 2-under score on such holes, while Powell was 1-under. The team's 116 pars were also second best in the field, led by Powell's 26.
The event was moved from Hoover Country Club to Heatherwood Golf Club after flash-flooding on Saturday rendered the course unplayable. The season opening tournament concludes on Tuesday, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
