Central Arkansas Scores in Overtime to Defeat Dolphins in ASUN Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Jacksonville's women's soccer team (5-3-2, 0-1-0 ASUN) dropped the ASUN opener against Central Arkansas (4-5-0, 1-0-0 ASUN), as the Bears scored in overtime to escape with the 1-0 victory. This is the third time the Dolphins have had a match go into overtime this season, and is the first time an overtime contest did not end in a draw.

The first ten minutes of the game were silent, as the ball made its way equally across the field. Central Arkansas took the first shot attempt of the game at the 17 minute mark, but was ultimately unsuccessful. During the next 20 minutes, the Dolphins defense stepped up to hold the Bears to only three more shots and prevented them from scoring. The Bears reciprocated by putting up a consistent, solid defense that would hold the Dolphins from making any shot attempts through the entirety of the half. After a 45 minute battle, the game remained scoreless going into halftime.

Central Arkansas came out stronger to start the second period. Within the first five minutes, the Bears rattled off three shots, two of which would be saved by Dolphins starting goalkeeper Courtney Green. The game grew quiet over the next 20 minutes until the Bears attempted two more shots, which would allow Green to accumulate another save. Over 10 minutes later, the Dolphins traveled down the field to make its first shot attempt of the game at the 80 minute mark. With only ten minutes left, each team managed to attempt to score once more before forcing the contest into overtime play.

The first set of extra minutes mimicked the opening of the match, as the ball was launched back-and-forth between the teams. Defense remained strong on both sides as neither the Dolphins or Bears were able to get anywhere near its intended goal for the majority of the period. Finally, at the 98 minute mark the Bears took back-to-back shot attempts, but were unsuccessful in scoring to end the game.

Quickly after the players reset for a second overtime period, the Bears came away with the ball to threaten JU's defense. Suddenly at the 101 minute mark, Central Arkansas's Emma Hawkins snuck the ball past the goalkeeper to defeat the Dolphins in sudden death fashion.

Up next, the Dolphins will round out the weekend with a matchup against Lipscomb (5-3-1, 0-1-0 ASUN) on Sunday Sept. 26. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the afternoon will serve as senior day. Before the game begins, JU will honor Anna Remensnyder, Julianne Hutchison, Rachel Walters, Adanna Edwards and Lola Negrete with a pre-game ceremony to highlight their accomplishments on and off the field.
