JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University women's golf sits in second place after day one of the Sea Best Jacksonville Classic, with freshman
Casey Powell tied for the lead after the first 36-holes.
The Dolphins' first round 285 was tied for the third lowest team round in program history and set the tone on a picture-perfect day at Marsh Landing Country Club.
The team settled into a good rhythm early, taking advantage of favorable course conditions and familiarity at the home event. Powell and
Frantiska Lunackova both shot 2-under 70s in round one. Powell only had one bogey on the front nine, and secured consecutive birdies on five and six. She then bounced back from a double-bogey on 14 to birdie three of her final four holes of the round.
She started the second round just as hot, recording red numbers on three of her first six holes of the second round. From there she bogeyed two straight before sinking 10 straight pars to conclude the day.
Lunackova used steadily consistent play to earn her 70, making two birdies on 10 and 14, while parring every other hole in the round.
Jenna Fonda was also very consistent, birdieing her fifth hole of the day, and giving one back on eight before ripping off 10 straight pars.
After eagling her fourth hole of the second round, she gave back a few strokes before closing strong, sinking one birdie and making par on her last five holes of the day to find herself in a tie for seventh.
Macarena Aguilera survived a roller-coaster first round, logging three bogeys, a double around a birdie on her first eight holes. From there, she got hot, hitting three birdies and an eagle 3-over her next seven, and she finished the round 1-over.
She was even better in the second round, playing 3-over through her first eight holes before finishing 3-under for her last 10 of the day, and she sits T7 as well.
Jenna Fonda shot even par in the first round, making one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars. She followed that up with more of an up-and-down second round, but finished by making five consecutive pars, and is currently T14.
Debra Ann Burdeshaw turned in a first round 74 featuring a birdie and 13 pars. She finished the day with 25 total, good enough for third-most on the team.
Laura Pasalodos was five shots better in her second round, making par on all but three holes as she settled in and she moved up seven spots on the leaderboard.
Mawgan Vater made 23 pars and improved in the second round by three strokes from her first, climbing three spots on the leaderboard in the afternoon.
Harley Hiltibrand collected four birdies on the day, good for third most on the team.
As a team, JU was the second-best scorers on Par-3s and the best in the field on Par-4s. JU's two eagles were the most for a team as well. Powell and Aguilera were one and two in Par-4 scoring, shooting 5-under and 3-under, respectively. Lunackova's 27 pars were tied for second overall and Powell and Aguilera led all players with eight birdies each.
Play wraps up tomorrow with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
