Jacksonville, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer program (4-4-4, 1-4-2) dropped a close 2-1 decision Thursday evening, to ASUN leader Liberty at Southern Oak Stadium.
After a back-and-forth start to begin the matchup, Liberty would strike first in the 29
th minute, off a header from Halle Engle, with the assist courtesy of Lena James on a free kick.
Less than 10 minutes later in the 37
th minute, the Flames would strike once again, when Rachel DeRuby would find the back of the net, giving Liberty a 2-0 edge in the contest.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening half, Jacksonville would score the contest's final tally. Following a handball by Liberty in the box,
Shelby Brim scored the ensuing penalty kick for the Dolphins in the top left corner, trimming the deficit to one entering halftime.
Coming out of the half, both programs struggled to create shot on goal opportunities. In the 73
rd minute, Liberty would have the second half's first scoring opportunity, which was stopped by 'Phins goalkeeper
Murphy Sheaff.
Less than 60 seconds later,
Selma Fohrer's shot attempt for JU would be halted by the Flames. JU's final scoring chance came in the 80
th minute, as Eden Skyer's strike would be stopped.
In the end, Liberty would hold on for the 2-1 victory.
The Dolphins return to Southern Oak Stadium this Sunday, welcoming new ASUN member Queens to the River City for a 1 PM showdown. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for Senior Day, as the Jacksonville women's soccer program honors five student-athletes for their accomplishments on-and-off the field during their time at JU.
