JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Dolphins opened their season with a double-header on Friday against NC State (2-0) and Western Carolina (1-1). At the end of day one of the River City Leadoff, the Dolphins would fall to both teams, starting the season 0-2.
In the season opener, JU and NC State exchanged zeroes through three innings before the Wolfpack broke open the flood gates. In the top of the fourth, Shaner of NC State would drive a two-run shot over the fence to begin what would be a large inning for the Wolfpack. They would drive in five total runs in the fourth, with another three in the top of the fifth to cap off a 0-8 victory against the hosting Dolphins.
In their second game, WCU held a 2-0 lead after holding the Dolphins scoreless through five innings. JU got their first run of the season off the bat of Allison Bratek, as she hit a home run to left field to conclude a hard-fought, ten-pitch at-bat. Bratek's resilience at the plate served as the only spark to the Dolphins' offense today as they couldn't get much going during their first day of play and they would drop their second contest 1-2.
JU will have a chance to even the score tomorrow, February 12th, at 4PM as they take on WCU in the first game of a double-header. Day two of the River City Leadoff will be capped off on Saturday night as the Dolphins face Campbell (1-1) at 6:30PM.
