Whitty Pitches Complete Game in Dolphins First Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. – On day two of the FAU Strikeout Cancer tournament, the Dolphins (1-11) took on LIU (1-9) in their only matchup of the day. In a tough battle, JU would come out on top 6-1 for their first victory of the season.

Skylar Whitty got the call to start this morning's game and she would never leave the mound. Whitty would pitch four scoreless innings until giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth, the only run she would allow in her complete game performance.

The Dolphins would answer that run right away in the next half inning to tie the ball game at one thanks to a single by Madison Bratek.

It wasn't until the top of the seventh that the bats broke out for the first time this season for JU. They would load the bases with two hits and a hit-by-pitch for starting DH, Kari Holzrichter. A bases clearing double to center field by Holzrichter would drive in three runs and give the Dolphins a 4-1 lead and momentum for the rest of the inning.

Madison Bratek would once again hit an RBI single, this time to extend the JU lead to 5-1 until a fielding error by LIU would send the Dolphins' sixth and final run across the plate. JU would score a total of five runs in the top of the seventh to come out victorious on day two.

With a complete game performance, Coach Ayers credited Skylar Whitty and the defense for their significant role in today's win, "Skylar threw a good ball game and gave us a chance, and the defense behind her was solid."

JU continues their tournament play on day three in a double header against Columbia (0-0) at 2PM and Michigan State (5-4) at 4:30PM. Both games will be played on Saturday, February 26th as the final day of the tournament.
