MELBOURNE, FLA – Jacksonville Men's Rowing put on another worthy display of racing on Saturday afternoon, when they won the Varsity 8 while also narrowly coming in second in both the Varsity Four and 2- race vs Florida Tech.
Starting off with the Varsity 8 race, the Dolphins were able to run two boats with the 1V coming in first, edging out Florida Tech by six seconds, and the 2V coming in third just eight seconds after the Panthers.
Moving on to the second race, the Varsity 4, JU suffered their largest loss of the day coming in second to Florida Tech by 26 seconds with a time of 7:03.
The Dolphins would then perform slightly better in the final race of the day but would still fall to the Panthers in the Varsity 2- when the pairing of
Harrison Mattern and
Jack McCarthy put in a solid time of 7:35, just 12 seconds off the pace set by Florida Tech.
JU will now take a sizeable break before they return to the water on Sunday, April 10, to compete in the Occoquan River Invite just south of Washington D.C.
POST EVENT THOUGHTS FROM COACH PRESTON WEINARD
"I thought todays performance was fantastic. JU boats were rowing long and strong and all had solid performances overall. Finishing in front of Florida Tech in the Varsity 8+ is never an easy feat and they put up a great race, in all of their crews. Our Varsity 4 was up against a very fast Crew and held their own, leaving it all out there. Our Varsity pair had a great race! The pair is a hard boat to row well and I think they put together a solid race from start to finish. Although today was a good day, we have room to grow and details to iron out over the next two weeks before the big back-to-back weekends of the Occoquan Invite and SIRA. The stakes are high, but this team keeps rising to the occasion and I am very proud of this team and how far they have come. Stoked for these next few big weeks!"
