Softball Splits Doubleheader with FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In two games that were back-and-forth, the Dolphins (15-27) and Eagles (15-31) split today's doubleheader.

Game one began in the Dolphins' favor, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after four scoreless innings from Skylar Whitty once again. The fifth inning was rough for JU however, as Whitty gave up back-to-back homers to bring the Eagles within one run. Later that inning, the Eagles would tie the game after multiple errors in the field by the Dolphins.

The game would remain tied at three for the rest of the game, pushing us into extra innings. Though each team seemingly left at least one runner on base per inning, it wasn't until the tenth inning that the tie was broken. FGCU would drive in four runs on four hits in the top of the tenth to take a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom half.

That would remain the final score as the Eagles completed their comeback and won 7-3 in ten innings. It was a game that took almost three hours, setting up game two to be exhausted.

Game two was much like game one, the Dolphins took a 3-0 lead through four innings into the fifth. Once again, the Eagles would tie the game, and even give themselves a one run lead in the top half of the fifth. However, this time, the Dolphins answered immediately in the bottom half. Crafty base-running and small ball allowed Madison Reynolds to drive in two runs off a single, followed by Tori Rodebaugh's fourth homer of the year to drive in two more runs.

Ju took a 7-4 lead into the sixth inning with confidence shining through the dugout. Though the Eagles would score one in the sixth, the Dolphins answered again with two more of their own to finalize the game at 9-5.

The Dolphins look to take a series win tomorrow, May 1st, at 1PM as they face off against the Eagles for game three. Ahead of tomorrow's game, the Dolphins will celebrate their graduating players for Senior Day!
