Dolphins Edged in Double Header at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball was edged twice by #21 Florida State in a doubleheader on Tuesday in Tallahassee.

The Dolphins (24-23) lead early in game one before falling 2-1 and rallied late, but came up short, losing 5-4 in game two.

GAME ONE

JU put pressure on FSU early. Elias Flowers was hit by a pitch and Christian Coipel drew a walk in the first, with a wild pitch advancing them both into scoring position. Tommy Joseph beat out an infield single that drove in a run to give the Dolphins the early 1-0 advantage.

Heston Mosley worked his way around baserunners for much of the afternoon. He hit a batter with one out in the first, before stranding him in scoring position. He left another man on in the second before his best work of the day in the third. After a review overturned a call at first allowing the leadoff man to reach and a hot batsman put two on with no one out, Mosley got a popup foul, a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat. He stranded a fifth runner of the day on in the fourth before running into trouble.

The fifth started with consecutive basehits and then a sacrifice bunt. The Dolphins made a pitching change and the next batter ripped a double off the screen in rightfield to drive in two and put the Seminoles in front 2-1.

JU put two on via a hit batsman and a walk in the sixth, but could not drive in a run, and again got the tying run on in the seventh before the game ended.

GAME TWO

Tyler Naumann started game two and allowed back-to-back two out singles in the first, but nothing more in his two innings of work.

After a pitching change to start the third, FSU led things off with a single, followed by a bouncing ball up the middle that Chase Malloy nearly turned a sensational double play on. A successful hit-and-run put runners at the corners before a hit batsman loaded them up. A double to center scored the first two runs of the game and a wild pitch and squeeze play that led to a play at the plate scored two to make it 4-0. A sacrifice fly brought in a fifth and the Seminoles took a 5-0 lead into the final four innings.

JU came back in the fourth and loaded the bases on consecutive doubles by Coipel and Blake DeLamielleure and a walk to Jake Berg. Jesus Pacheco was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the game for the Dolphins and brought it within four, 5-1.

Flowers beat out an infield single with two outs in the fifth, and Coipel lifted one to deep right that was caught on the warning track. In the sixth, a hit batsman and consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs, but Cam Ridley's deep drive to left was caught at the wall to end the threat. In the seventh, Flowers, Coipel and DeLamielleure strung together consecutive singles to load the bases again. Jackson Grabsky singled up the middle to plate two, and a throwing error by the centerfielder scored another run and moved Grabsky to third. A groundout back to the pitcher ended the game with the tying run at third.
