Women's Basketball Battled but Fell Short to The Colonels

RICHMOND, KY- Jacksonville University women's basketball program matched up with Eastern Kentucky Monday afternoon in Baptist Health Arena. JU battled but came up short 70-79.  

Shynia Jackson with a layup and a three pointer from Jalisa Dunlap started the scoring for the Dolphins early in the first quarter. Seraphine Bastin with back-to-back layups extended the lead by seven. The Colonels started to find momentum coming back within two, freshman Kyshonna Brown answered with a three-pointer putting Jacksonville up by three. A layup from Benie Lundu seconds before the buzzer tied the game at 20 ending the first quarter. In the second quarter the Dolphins are still full of energy Jackson continues to score for Jacksonville. The dynamic shifted many times during the quarter, a three from DeShari Graham and a layup from Bastin put the Dolphins within two points. The Colonels led going into halftime 35-32.  

Jacksonville came out with the same energy they left the court with before halftime. In the third quarter a layup and two free throws from MaKayla Edwards put the Dolphins down by one. Another three from Graham tied the game at 39-39. Edwards tied the game again at 44-44 with a three pointer. Dunlap took over the third quarter with two threes within seconds of each other. The Dolphins outscored the Colonels 24 to 15. In the final quarter the two programs traded points. Eastern Kentucky fought to pull away by two mid quarter.  Free throws from Jackson put the Dolphins up by one. The Colonels responded with back-to-back buckets and Lundu responded with a layup. Junior Delayna Gillard came in and shot a floater to give the Dolphins some momentum, but Jacksonville is trailing by six. Eastern Kentucky pulled ahead shooting 63 percent from the field.

The Dolphins return to Swisher Gymnasium on Thursday for the River City Rumble against North Florida.
