RICHMOND, Ky.- The Jacksonville women's soccer team earned their first point of the conference season in a 0-0 nailbiter against Eastern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Most of the first half featured end-to-end soccer, with both sides stretching the opposing team's defense in attempts to execute a successful counterattack. The first dangerous chance came from EKU when, in the 16th minute, Maia Ransom ripped a shot that hit the post and bounced to another EKU player, who shot the rebound on frame. However, redshirt junior
Logan Gonzales parried the ball out for a corner. Jacksonville handled the press from the Colonels well, and just a couple of minutes later,
Lillian Young and
Beyonce Robinson had shots of their own in attempts to break the draw. Young and
Anaya Black burst forward on a counterattack shortly thereafter, and a two-on-one opportunity presented itself. Young again fired a shot, which flew just over the crossbar. The best chance of the half came when the Colonels were awarded a penalty kick in the 31st minute, one that Ransom stepped up to take. She fired her shot towards the bottom right corner, but a diving Gonzales met the ball halfway and held on to complete the save, sending the game into halftime knotted at zero.
Â
Gonzales again started the second half with a big save on a shot that the Colonels sent towards the top right corner. Tracking perfectly back and to her right, she was able to gather the ball. In the 57th minute, a solid combination from Robinson and Radtke saw Robinson in the box with the ball at her feet. Robinson sent a pass to Black, whose shot was smothered by an EKU defender. Both sides continued to push and stretch the field, with EKU even hitting the post a few times. However, the story of the afternoon was the Dolphins' defense, highlighted by Gonzales in net, who finished the game with eight saves, a season high.
WHAT THEY SAID
"I am very proud of our team," said head coach
John Constable. "It's been a tough old season so far but it's a fantastic point on the road on (their) senior day at an opponent that is unbeaten in five games. That performance epitomized everything that has been good about our program the past few years. A performance full of heart, grit, and desire."
