JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bre'Yanna Frazier's game-changing moment helped sail the Jacksonville women's basketball team (3-4) to victory over local foe Edward Waters (4-4) in an 87-70 triumph at Swisher Gymnasium on Monday night.
The trio of Edyn Battle, Bre'Yanna Frazier, and Kyshonna Brown combined for 59 points. Frazier recorded a new season high of 17 points, Brown achieved a new season high with 14 points, and Battle nearly matched her previous high, finishing with 28.
Isamery Telleria, trending to open the scoring for the Dolphins, did just that. With 6:30 left in the first quarter, Telleria knocked down a trey, putting JU up 3-2. The Dolphins' anchor, Battle, then gave the team a seven-point swing in under a minute, leaving Edward Waters trailing 11-4 with 5:00 remaining. A technical foul put Battle back at the line, giving her the ninth point of the evening, scoring nine in under four minutes of play. Edward Waters rallied back, managing to get within five as two minutes of play remained, but Dolphin's freshman Asiana Britt got downhill twice to give JU a six-point cushion of 21-15 with 40 seconds left.
After the media timeout, Edward Waters opened and managed to reel in a 24-22 deficit with 6:49 left to play. The Tigers held the Dolphins to just three points in the initial four minutes; however, Frazier wouldn't stand by, erupting for a 14-5 run to give JU a 38-22 lead with 3:18 remaining. The Tigers managed to narrow the score, only looking to climb from a 44-33 disadvantage. Head Coach Special Jennings then felt the need to call a timeout and draw up a set that led to a buzzer-beater three by Telleria to assert that Swisher was Dolphin territory.
A few free throws by Jalisa Dunlap and a big three by Battle guided JU to a 54-41 lead halfway into the third quarter. Brown and Frazier went on a 10-5 run together in consecutive transition buckets, providing a 65-46 lead with 1:40 remaining. By the horn, the Dolphins saw a 20-point advantage of 66-46.
A trade-off of buckets favored EWU slightly as the score reached 70-57. Four points by Battle helped the Dolphins keep the Tigers at bay. Edward Waters then implemented a press that may not have been the best strategy, as Coach Jennings and the Dolphins went on to build an 82-61 lead, thanks to seven quick points by Brown and another surge by Battle. Julene Royale put the dagger in the game with a smooth three, giving JU a final 87-70 win.
