DELAND, Fla.- The Jacksonville men's rowing team completed their first official race on Saturday at the DeLand Double Duals. The race also featured Colgate, Emry-Riddle and Stetson.
In the Varsity Eights, Jacksonville claimed second with a 5:50.6 time. Colgate took first first at 5:47.1 and Stetson took third with a time of 5:56.9. JU's Second Varsity Eight took fourth at 6:14.3 and Embry-Riddle finished fifth.
In the Varsity Fours, Colgate again finished in first with a time of 6:53.5. Jacksonville's First and Second Varsity Fours took second and third, respectively, with times of 7:05.4 and 7:20.5.
The Varsity Pairs saw Stetson claim first with a time of 7:49.3, with the Dolphins First and Second Varsity Pairs taking second and third.
"Overall, I'd say the day was successful," said head coach
Preston Weinard on his teams first completed competitive race of the spring. "We were able to get some valuable data across all boats to help the team propel forward into the meat of our spring season. In the eights, I was pleased with each boat for their competitiveness. In the fours, I was proud to see our two novice coxswains handle racing so well for their first time, and for the rowers for backing them up. For the small boats, it was a tough race out there overall, but the learning curve is exponential for those guys, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they can develop in those boats. Colgate, Stetson, and Embry-Riddle are all well-coached crews, and I'm looking forward to racing them again soon!"
