JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three low scoring games all went Stetson's way Sunday as the Hatters swept Jacksonville's final home stand of the season in a marathon day at the Debbie and Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
Two games went extra innings, including one that was resumed after an overnight delay, and the Dolphins fell short after a sensational late comeback in game three of the day.
Doubleheader Game 2
The Dolphins (23-25, 9-12 ASUN) mounted a ferocious comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning but fell just short, 3-2.
JU, which had been handcuffed by Stetson pitcher Lauren Hobbs, who allowed no hits through six innings, didn't give up but instead launched themselves in the last inning on the windswept day.
Junior Kari Holrichter, pinch hitting for Tatianna Davis, got the first Dolphin hit of the game with an infield single and Davis came in to pinch run. She was caught stealing on a close play at second base for the first out. Victoria Rodebaugh then was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Madison Bratek singled to left.
Kailey Harrigan then singled to left and advanced to second on a throwing error which allowed Rodebaugh to score and moved Bratek to third. First baseman Lindsey Chadwick pinch ran for Harrigan and moved to third when the first pitch to Madison Kennedy went wild and scored Bratek pulling JU to the 3-2 deficit.
A ground out back to Hobbs, who had her 15th complete game of the season, and a foul out to third ended the game.
Stetson (27-25, 11-10 ASUN) had scored a run in the third and in the fourth catcher Jordyn Stanfill hit a two-run homer which wound up being the game winning hit.
Doubleheader Game 1
In the first game of the scheduled twin bill, Stetson used a four run ninth inning to drop the Dolphins, 5-1, in the second extra inning affair of the day.
The Hatters jumped to a first inning 1-0 lead, but the Dolphins fought back to tie in the third.
The JU run came with a pair of outs when third baseman Rodebaugh was hit by a pitch and scored when Allison Bratek hit a 3-2 pitch to right for a run scoring double, the last run for either team until the ninth.
Both teams threatened in the eighth inning as each put a pair of runners on base but neither could bring a run home.
Stetson locked the game in the top of the ninth when Brianna Clary singled for her fourth hit of the game. After a pair of walks, a sacrifice fly and another base hit, shortstop Kami Eppley hit a bases clearing triple to right center for the game's final margin.
Saturday's delayed game
The day's opening action was a marathon event that began Saturday, was interrupted overnight by bad weather and wound up going extra innings as the Dolphins fell 3-2.
On Saturday, Stetson had taken a 1-0 lead but JU tied in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joely Leguizamon doubled to center field and sophomore Tatianna Davis singled to center allowing Leguizamon to score.??
Mother Nature then intervened with lightning and a downpour and after a delay of about a half hour the game was put on hold until Sunday.??
After play resumed Sunday the teams played even until a two-run Stetson top of the ninth but the Dolphins came back when Holzrichter singled home Chadwick with the game's final run. Kennedy had three hits in the loss.
The Dolphins, still in the battle for a spot in the ASUN post season tournament, end their regular season next weekend with a three-game series at North Florida. Games are scheduled Thursday through Saturday with a start time of 7 p.m. each game.
