FAIRFAX STATION, Va.- The Jacksonville men's rowing team completed a day of racing on Easter Sunday at the Occuquan Collegiate Invitational in Virginia.
The weather was near perfect and the water conditions reflected the scenery on Sunday. If there was any wind noticeable throughout the afternoon, it was a slight tail wind that encouraged a competitive afternoon amongst the teams.
Jacksonville's First Varsity Eight placed fourth behind the likes of Navy, St. Joes and Drexel to earn a spot in the 1V8 B Final. The Dolphins went on to win the B final, improving their race time by nearly eight seconds and placing above St. Joe's, Hobart and Marietta respectively.
The Dolphins Second Varsity Eight also placed fourth in their respective heat behind similar foes. JU was able to clinch third in the 2V8 B Final behind Hobart and St. Joe's but ahead of Marietta. The Dolphins Third Varsity Eight claimed third in the 3V8 heat, and fifth overall in the second 3V8 race.
"While it was nice to see the First Varsity Eight perform and win their Petite Final," said head coach
Preston Weinard on his teams performance on Easter. "I think the Second and Third Varsity Eight's learned a lesson about how hard they need to push themselves."Â
"We're certainly going to push ourselves this week and sharpen up our strokes front to back," further added coach Weinard ahead of the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. "Everything we do now until then will reflect on SIRA so we're going to push ourselves until then."
The Dolphins have a quick turnaround with a weekend at Melton Lake Park next weekend that will see them compete at SIRA. Winners from SIRA will receive an automatic bid to compete in the IRA National Championships in June
