Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Alison Carter hit a towering home run to right field in the top of the eighth inning to power Jacksonville University past North Florida, 5-4, at the North Florida Softball Complex Friday. The win snapped a four-game Dolphin losing streak.
For Carter, from Stafford, Va., the round tripper was her third of the season and a continuation of a power show she put started two innings earlier in the sixth when she nearly homered in another at-bat.
Down 4-3, the Dolphins (24-26, 10-13 ASUN) sent seven batters to the plate in the top of the sixth and tied the score which eventually led to the extra innings.
Kari Holzrichter led off with a single to right and advanced to second on wild pitch. First baseman Kailey Harrigan then walked, and Hallie Kern came in as a pinch runner. Carter then hammered a pinch hit double to deep right scoring Holzrichter to make it 4-4. After a ground out, Madison Bratek hit a ground ball to the pitcher who caught Kern in a rundown heading home and tagged her for the second out. A walk to second baseman Joely Leguizamon loaded the bases but a strike out ended the threat.
The Dolphins had gotten to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth as Madison Kennedy led off with a double and Hannah Nasco came in to pinch run. Bratek then reached second on a two-base error scoring Nasco. Bratek touched the plate after sacrifice bunts from Leguizamon and Madison Reynolds.
UNF (29-22-1, 10-12-1 ASUN) got off to an early lead with a run in the second and the Dolphins responded with a run in the third.
The Ospreys retaliated with a single run in the bottom of the third and a pair of runs in the fourth.
The series, part of the River City Rumble, is tied at one and winds up Saturday with game three at UNF set to start at 7 p.m. The game is the last regular season game for each team.
