HOW IT HAPPENED
A first-half goal that just trickled into the back of the net proved to be enough to see the Hatters take the conference opener against the Dolphins (2-4-2). Possession was almost 50/50 in the first half, and both sides had glaring opportunities. A series of connecting passes and a Hatters counter-attack led to Gende placing a through-ball at the edge of the 18-yard box. Place, with a right-footed finish, managed to get the ball just beyond the reach of Dolphins goalkeeper
Gretchen Duttenhofer, finding the net. Less than five minutes later,
Beyonce Robinson broke through the Stetson defensive line, but her shot was blocked by Mallory Osborne. In the 38th minute, freshman
Lillian Young seized upon a weak clearance from the Hatters' defense, executing a right-footed volley that curved and dipped toward the top right corner. However, once more, the Stetson keeper was on hand to make the save. Despite the Dolphins increasing the pressure, the Hatters' defense remained resilient, and they were rewarded with a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Jacksonville continued to keep its foot on the throttle on the offensive side, firing a total of 10 shots throughout the pitch. Robinson rattled a shot off the crossbar with under 15 minutes left, and the Dolphins recorded five of the last six shots of the game, but the end of the second half was the same as the first, with Stetson hanging on to their one-goal lead.
