JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University Men's Soccer and FGCU tied 2–2 Saturday night in Southern Oak Stadium.
The hard-nosed battle between Jacksonville University and FGCU was nothing short of a grudge match. FGCU finished with eight yellow cards and committed 15 fouls. It was easy to see that Saturday night marked the first conference match of the year. Both teams left it all out on the field, and the match ultimately finished with a point for head coach Ali Simmons in his first conference game in the Atlantic Sun.
Momentum transitioned between both universities throughout the night. FGCU's Luis Lugo initiated the scoring late in the first half with a low right attack, but that nearly turned the Dolphins' fortunes around. After gauging the Eagles' aggression, Jacksonville and graduate senior Mason Duval punched back shortly after, leaving the scoreboard at 1-1 going into the second half.
With energy running high and tackles flying, the second half sent players, fans, and coaches into a frenzy in the name of competitive spirit. After multiple dangerous shots on goal by both teams, FGCU's Luis Lugo opened the scoring again after being assisted by Pau Santanach. The Dolphins did not back down, sacrificing their bodies for the best opportunity to win. FGCU continued to be overly aggressive and committed a critical foul that resulted in a penalty kick for redshirt junior Kasper Davidson. Davidson did not disappoint as he easily claimed his first goal of the season and sent the Dolphins to a 2-2 draw. As the battle continued, both teams tried their best to one-up the even score. JU had a convincing last-minute run, but the Eagle defense just barely held on, leaving the match level.
