Men's Soccer Fall 1-0 Tuesday Night

CLINTON, S.C. – Jacksonville men's soccer fell short 1-0 vs. Presbyterian Tuesday evening in Martin Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

JU entered the night with a 2-4-1 record after their Saturday point against FGCU, while 2-3 Presbyterian also came in following a 2-1 loss the previous Saturday. After a tough weekend, both teams were hungry for their next win. The Blue Hose had a reputation for close wins against JU, leading 3-1 in the last four matchups. Tonight felt like a flashback, as the match resulted in a close loss for the Dolphins. In the 82nd minute, the Blue Hose stretched the score to 1-0 with a penalty kick awarded to senior Carson Griffith.

The majority of the attempts came primarily from the Dolphins' forward Mason Duval and Presbyterian midfielder Diego Hernandez, totaling six of the evening's 11 shots. Duval, leading the Dolphins, fired off two shots on goal in the first half against the Blue Hose defense, forcing PC keeper Beatty Murray to prove his presence. Presbyterian freshman Hernandez responded with a shot attempt of his own towards the end of the first half.

At the beginning of the second half, PC desperately launched two shots in the first few minutes, but Christian Sekanina stood strong and denied both shots on goal. Approaching the middle of the second half, Duval attempted to take the lead for the Dolphins with two more back-to-back shots on goal. As the clock ticked on, Presbyterian put up another two shots, including the penalty that ultimately decided the game. In a last-minute effort, defender Cole Reasonover tried to level the score in the 84th minute. However, time expired before the Dolphins could respond.

WHAT THEY SAID

"It was a game that seemed destined for a 0-0 tie," said Head Coach Ali Simmons. "We came out flat in the first half, still had a couple of decent chances, but nowhere near our usual levels. The second half was very even, and then a soft penalty gave them the win late on. We need to dust ourselves off and then look ahead to Saturday for a very tough local game against UNF."

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • Sophomore defender Joshua Izu earned his first start on the season

  • Mason Duval took four shots on the night, three on goal
