HOW IT HAPPENED
Another beautiful afternoon at Southern Oak saw both the Dolphins (1-2-2) and Blue Hose start the game off slowly on the offensive front as they tried to get into the game. It took just over 11 minutes for the first shot of the game to be recorded, and another five for the game's first goal, once scored by the Blue Hose. The Dolphins responded with a goal on their first shot of the game just under eight minutes later. Ines Martin lined up for a corner kick and sent a ball flying just inside the 18-yard box, finding the head of
Hannah Bielicke. Bielicke then sent the ball back across the goal, where
Makala Woodford was lurking. She finished the play, and JU saw itself celebrating a tie game. As quickly as the celebrations started, the Blue Hose found themselves in the Dolphins' final third, and a loose ball in the box was sent into the goal by PC, scoring just 21 seconds after the JU equalizer. Jacksonville, however, pounced on their next opportunity just moments later as Martin stepped up to take a penalty kick, and just as smoothly and confidently as her previous penalty this season, placed it in the bottom corner. Both sides locked down the hatches for the rest of the opening half, and the 10 minutes of scoring led to a 2-2 tie at the break.
Â
The Dolphins opened the second half with a shot by
Mariama Dabo just seconds into the half. Though it just missed, the tone was set for the next 15 minutes as JU peppered off another five shots to Presbyterian's one. The Blue Hose then tried to switch the script and turned up the pressure in the later parts of the game. However, the Dolphins' defense stood tall and kept PC at two goals, thanks in part to key defensive stops from
Logan Gonzales,
Millie Urquhart, and netminder Gretchen Dunnenhofer. Regardless, both sides shared possession down the stretch but were unable to break the opposing defense down one last time, resulting in a draw.
