A dominant fourth quarter propelled the Jacksonville women's basketball team to a 58-50 win over the Florida A&M Rattlers Monday night at Swisher Gymnasium.
The Dolphins (3-1) trailed after three quarters, but in crunch time, Jacksonville rattled off a final quarter for the ages. JU outscored the visitors 24-8 in the fourth to secure the win.
"We have incredible young ladies, and I'm just happy we were able to figure out how to win," head coach
Special Jennings said.
The big final frame was buoyed by a dominant display from graduate student forward
Makayla Edwards. The veteran scored 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, and she outscored Florida A&M by herself in the final period.
"I just had to grit it out, I had to just do what I needed to do," Edwards said.
The Dolphins were led on the night by senior guard
Edyn Battle, who reached a historic milestone in the win. In the second quarter, she eclipsed 1,000 points for her career. She finished the game with 24 points.Â
"It's been a journey, " Battle said about the milestone. "We ain't done yet, though. Just getting started."
The first half was a battle for the Dolphins. The first quarter was a high-flying showcase of fast-paced basketball. The Rattlers took a 17-15 lead after one, but Jacksonville kept close behind. The second quarter proved difficult, as the visitors outscored the Dolphins 13-3. Jacksonville flipped the script in the second half. Behind incredible rebounding --- led by sophomore
Saniyah Craig's program-record 20 --- and improved shooting, the Dolphins outscored Florida A&M 37-20 in the second half.

Head Coach Special Jennings
"It's no secret, we did not play our best basketball today, but, you know, really good teams figure out how to win, and we did that. We had a surge in the fourth quarter that kind of got us over that hump. But it's back to the drawing board. Wins are hard to come by, so I'm happy that we were able to figure it out down the stretch"
