Dolphins Stumped In Tallahassee By The Noles

TALLAHASSE, Fla.- Jacksonville baseball (13-15) was defeated by No. 14 Florida State (23-4) 3-1 on Tuesday evening, in the second round between the 'Noles and the 'Phins of the 2024 season.

The Dolphins kept things tight throughout the game, but never could get ahead of the Seminoles in the matchup.

Blake Barquin started on the mound for Jacksonville and pitched six innings, giving up three runs off four hits, a walk and four punchouts.

The matchup started off quietly with no real action going until the 'Noles got on the board in the bottom of the third with a line drive that was beamed back to Barquin. Barquin was checked out by the medical staff after the line drive but ultimately he stayed in and delivered a strikeout to get the Dolphins out of the inning without any further damage.

Jacksonville quickly responded in the top of the fourth to tie things back up at one apiece. After Will Gale led off the inning with a lead off walk, he advanced to third after a wild pitch got him to second, and a passed ball advanced him to third. This set up Clayton Hodges up at the plate to deliver and deliver he did, driving the ball back up the middle for the Dolphins first hit as well as their first run.

Florida State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after a two-run Tibbs homerun to make it 3-1 Noles.

Jacksonville continued to battle in the top of the seventh, as Cade Hentz drove in Blake Edmonds on a sacrifice fly to cut the Noles lead to one.

Following the seventh inning stretch, Logan Jones relieved Barquin on the mound. The Noles offense extended their lead with a Fisher double to make it 4-2 FSU. Jack Carver came into replace Jones with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Carver also gave up a Noles RBI double, making it 5-2, but escaped the inning without any further damage with a strikeout.

The Dolphins remained determined to keep fighting and responded with a run in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit back to two.

Carver remained in the game to pitch in the eighth and set the 'Phins up with a chance to rally late, after striking out two Noles batters to end the inning. Jacksonville couldn't get anything going in the ninth though and was beat 5-3. Barquin was credited with the loss.
