TAMPA, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team is still looking for its first win of the year after a 5-1 loss to USF. The contest completes a two-game road trip for the Dolphins (0-2) to begin their 2024 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sunday evening match went USF's way quickly, as the Bulls netted the game's first goal off a free kick redirection in the seventh minute. In the 35
th, USF scored off another set piece.
With about 30 seconds to go before the halftime whistle, the Bulls snuck one in under starting keeper
Pia Bozic's gloves to give themselves a three-goal lead. Bozic faced a solid bit of pressure in the first half, logging one save in her first start of the year.
Offensively, it was a slow night for the 'Phins as JU didn't register its first shot until the 48
th minute. Seconds later,
Logan Gonzales angled a slow roller past the USF goalie for the team's first goal of the game and the season. The goal by Gonzales was the Dolphins' final shot of the night, giving them two for the game.
Gretchen Duttenhofer took over the net in the second half, making one save and allowing two goals on six shots. The junior immediately was tested by USF, allowing a goal in the opening two minutes of the second half. The Bulls ended with 21 shots and 11 corners.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We learned a lot," coach Ryan Moon said. "First half was not where we want to be. We got punished in moments which happens against strong opposition like USF. Second half, we had a better reaction and kept pushing to make something out of the game when we could have gone the other way. A great opportunity for us to learn and get better as we grow into the season."
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Gonzales' goal is the third of her career and first since the 2021 season.
- Andrea Zwinkels and Gonzales each played for over 70 minutes which led the game. Zwinkels finished with 76 minutes played, Gonzales with 73.
