#24 Louisville Defeats Dolphins in Season Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the 2024 season opener, the Jacksonville University men's soccer team fell 2-0 against 24th-ranked Louisville. The Cardinals used a pair of first half goals to take the victory, with both goals coming late in the first.

A steady performance for Jacksonville finished with a loss for the Dolphins, as Louisville scored twice in quick succession late in the first half and held on throughout. Josh Jones (UL) struck first in the match, scoring in the 38th minute, finding himself on the right end of a Noah De Blasis (UL) assist.

Just moments later, Gage Guerra (UL) added to the Cardinal lead, scoring in the 39th minute with an assist from Sander Roed (UL). Guerra and Jones were MLS Draftees a season ago, returning to Louisville for their senior seasons. Roed moved to just three assists shy of the Louisville program record.

Christian Sekanina had Jacksonville's biggest highlight on the day, saving a penalty kick opportunity late in the game, keeping the deficit to two with just four minutes remaining in the game. Sekanina was one of three Dolphins to play the full 90 minutes, with Paul Danner and Kasper Davidsson joining him in that trio.

Olivier Correa provided spark in the offensive end, playing 70 minutes with three shots, two of them on goal to lead the team in both categories. Sekanina's final line finished with 12 shots faced, making four saves.
