Jacksonville trailed through the first three quarters against Austin Peay. Despite all the adversity, the Dolphins never backed away from the challenge. Facing a 14-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, JU showed its toughness.
The Jacksonville women's basketball team defeated the Austin Peay Governors 65-61 Saturday afternoon, capped by a 31-13 fourth quarter surge to complete the comeback.
"I'm proud of our ladies' effort," JU head coach
Special Jennings said. "We kept fighting and we kept chipping away."
The Dolphins (8-10, 2-4 ASUN) were led by senior guards
Edyn Battle and
Priscilla Williams.
Battle scored a team-high 23 points. She also made key plays on defense, finishing with a team-high four steals. Williams dropped 16 points and recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds while also dishing five assists.
The first three quarters were a defensive battle. Both teams struggled from the field, but the hosting Governors took the early advantage. While the Dolphins tightened up in the third quarter, Austin Peay still led by 14 at the start of the final quarter.
Then the run started.Â
Battle drove to the hoop for an early layup through contact, and converted the and-one opportunity. Sophomore forward
Saniyah Craig --- who recorded her third-straight double-double --- drilled a turn-around shot in the paint, and freshman guard
Comari Mitchell hit a mid-range jumper to force an Austin Peay timeout and cap an 8-0 JU run.
The Dolphins weren't done yet.
With five minutes left in the game, Williams drained her second triple of the night to cut the deficit to three. After a Williams rebound, Battle hit another pull-up jumper to make it a one-point game.
Austin Peay scored on the other end, but Williams was ready with an answer. She scored three the old fashioned way, finishing through contact and converting the three-point play. Mitchell stole the ball away on the ensuing Governors possession, and Battle finished to give Jacksonville its first lead of the night.
JU still needed to close out the game, though.Â
Austin Peay cut the lead to two with under a minute to play. With the shot clock winding down, the Dolphins found Battle at the top of the key. The senior guard made a move on her defender and launched a 3-pointer.
Splash. Battle's first triple of the game gave Jacksonville a five-point advantage it wouldn't surrender as it clinched its second ASUN victory of the season.
