CONWAY, Ark. --- Jacksonville finished its four-match road trip against the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears, falling in four sets.
Junior
Rebekah Williams led the way with a career-high 20 kills. She also recorded her second consecutive double-double, adding 16 digs.
How It Happened
Set One
The opening game was every bit the heavyweight showdown it was billed to be. The Sugar Bears took an 18-12 lead, and they looked poised to strike first. However, the Dolphins rallied in the back half of the first set.
Jacksonville flipped control of the game, tying the match off the hand of freshman
Kathryn Adler. Adler put the Dolphins in front, 21-20 on the next point. The set wouldn't be won easily, with the Sugar Bears erasing a JU set point and earning one of their own.
Jacksonville gritted out the result, though, with graduate student
Madi Novak and junior
Alija Heins combining for back-to-back blocks to win the opener, 28=26.
Set Two
The second set was somehow even closer. Central Arkansas pulled ahead late, nursing a four-point advantage as it approached set point. The Sugar Bears reached set point, 24-20, putting JU's back against the wall.
Four-straight Dolphin points not only erased the deficit, but gave Jacksonville a chance to win the set. From there, the teams traded points in a marathon tiebreak, with three-straight UCA kills ending the set with a 30-28 Sugar Bear win.
Set Three
Senior
Breanna McDonough hit a major career milestone in the third set, hitting her 1,000th career kill as JU took an early 9-7 lead. The Sugar Bears controlled the pace the rest of the set, though, with UCA taking five of the final six points to win 25-18.
Set Four
The Sugar Bears pulled ahead early, but the Dolphins once again fought to keep the match going. UCA led by as many as six, but JU erased the deficit, taking a 22-21 lead. After Jacksonville killed one Central Arkansas match point, UCA scored the next two points to close out the match, 26-24.
