MOBILE, Ala. --The Jacksonville Dolphins broke through after a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning to beat the South Alabama Jaguars 11-3 Friday evening.
Senior Richard Long (2-1) got the win for Jacksonville (4-5). The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.
Josh Fernald also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.
At the plate, the Dolphins were led by senior Blake DeLamielleure, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and five RBI. Sophomore Jaden Bastian put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, a walk and four RBI. Junior Blake Edmonds also contributed for Jacksonville, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dolphins got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Jacksonville got an RBI single from senior Aidan Masters, scoring sophomore Jonah Shields from second base.
After the Jaguars rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Dolphins came back to retake the lead in the seventh inning.
Jacksonville regained the lead with an RBI double from Shields, followed by DeLamielleure's two-RBI single, extending the Dolphins' advantage to 4-1.
Jacksonville held South Alabama without a run before expanding their lead to 10-1 the following inning. The Dolphins bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of DeLamielleure and a three-run double from Bastian.
The Jaguars fought back, closing the gap to 10-3 until Jacksonville added some insurance in the ninth. The 'Phins notched a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Bastian, scoring sophomore Cade Hentz, bringing the Jacksonville advantage to 11-3.
The score remained 11-3 for the rest of the game, as the Dolphins coasted to the win.
