The Jacksonville University women's basketball team fell to the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears 76-65 Thursday night.
The Dolphins (11-12, 5-6 ASUN) were led by senior guard
Edyn Battle, who finished with 14 points in the game. Senior guard
Priscilla Williams finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists to help lead the way for Jacksonville.
The first quarter was a near stalemate. Graduate student forward
Makayla Edwards led the early with four quick points, but the Sugar Bears were ready with a response. Junior guard Jules Royale cashed in an open triple to give JU a 14-12 lead, but Central Arkansas took an 18-16 lead into the first quarter break.
The Sugar Bears pulled further ahead early in the second, with a strong defensive showing keeping the Dolphins quiet. But senior center
Jada Duckett responded with a strong layup through contact and a free-throw line jumper on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to five.
The Dolphins took momentum early in the second half. Williams drained a long triple and hit a pair of free throws to give the Dolphins a quick spark. Sophomore guard
Sana'a Garrett drove baseline for a tough layup to cut the lead to three.
Central Arkansas responded, however. The Sugar Wolves closed out and pulled away in the final quarter. The Dolphins fought in the final moments, with Garrett and junior guard
Isamery Telleria scoring late buckets to give Jacksonville a fighting chance in the final moments.
