Dolphins Drop Pitching Duel With Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- In a rematch of a highly competitive Dolphin win the night before, Jacksonville University fell to Jacksonville State 1-0.

The Dolphins (2-1) put freshman Hailey Strunk on the bump for the morning matchup and got a full game's worth of pitching from the Pennsylvania native.

Strunk went the distance while tossing five strikeouts in the first start of her budding career. Strunk allowed just four hits all game while walking just a pair of batters.

In the third, JSU scored the game's only run off a grounder to short that scored a runner from third.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Friday afternoon's game between the two Jacksonville-named schools was a pitcher's duel and Saturday morning's game was no different.

JU totaled just three hits in the game, with one each coming from Alison Carter, Lindsey Chadwick and Kiersten Stevens

Chadwick drew the team's only walk and hit the team's lone double. The 'Phins made good contact all game, striking out just two times as a team, but could not find sustained time on the basepath. Leadoff hitter Madison Bratek made contact all three times she was at the plate but couldn't get the ball to the ground.

Only three Gamecock batters collected hits, led by two hits from JSU's leadoff.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carter singled to right field followed by Chadwick's walk. With two runners on, JU hit into a double play to end the game.

GAME NOTES

  • Strunk limited Jacksonville State to just 1-for-12 (.083) with runners in scoring position.
  • Strunk faced 29 Jacksonville State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and seven fly balls.
