Dolphins Drop Tilt With Florida State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville University traveled just down the street to UNF for a midweek test against No. 8 Florida State, where the Dolphins fell 9-1.

Alison Carter was the responsible party for the 'Phins' lone run, a solo home run shot in the seventh inning. On a 2-2 count, Carter cranked her second home run of the year to put the Dolphins on the board late. Prior to facing the Dolphins (11-8), FSU had beaten its last two teams by a combined score of 27-1.

Coach Erica Ayers deployed a fleet of arms against the Seminoles, getting her pitchers some final burn before conference play begins. Skylar Waggoner (3-2) got the start and went one inning, allowing a single run.

Jordan White, Reese Wells, Hailey Strunk, Ashlee Harwood, Jacy Harrelson and Karson Johnson all pitched in an inning following. Neither Waggoner nor Strunk allowed a hit in their time in the circle.

Just five of FSU's runs were earned as three errors in the field allowed FSU to garner a few extra runs on the scoreboard.

At the plate, Carter was the star of the game. The right fielder went a team-best 2-3 including her homer. Preseason All-ASUN catcher Averi Harcus knocked in the team's only other hit.

FSU's 12 hits were its lowest output in its past two games.

Starting Thursday, March 6, Jacksonville will begin its final stretch before conference play begins on March 15.

The Dolphins will host St. John's on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. EST on JU campus for the team's first game of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge. Then, JU will square off against Mercer on March 7 and Army on March 8 and 9 at UNF. The Sunday game against Army will be JU's last non-conference game before ASUN play starts at FGCU on March 15 at 2:00 p.m. EST.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"We need to settle in defensively and play a lot sharper," Ayers said of what she wants to fine tune before ASUN play. "We are capable. It is going to be incredibly important as we get into league play."

GAME NOTES

  • Jacksonville pitchers faced 39 Florida State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and 11 fly balls.
  • Carter's home run was her second of the season and the team's fifth of the year.
