Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Dolphins Upset No. 18 Navy For Second Straight Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Jacksonville women's lacrosse team upset the No. 18 Navy Midshipmen, 10-9, marking the program's first ranked win since defeating No. 21 Pennsylvania on March 11, 2023. This is the program's third ranked win under head coach Tara Singleton.

The Dolphins were led by freshman attacker Shae Hagans. The team's leading scorer delivered another excellent performance, scoring her third hat-trick of the season and finishing with four points. She saved her best for the biggest moment, though. With seconds ticking down in the fourth quarter, the freshman from Prosper, Texas, buried her third goal of the game to secure Jacksonville's win.

Hagans leads the team with 16 points (12G, 4A) this season.

"I think she's a baller," Singleton said. "She comes to practices every day the same way, and makes mistakes, does good stuff, but keeps showing up, trying to push the envelope."

The defense more than played its part, anchored by junior net-minder Brookelynn Hodgin. She saved 13 shots while allowing just nine goals, securing her biggest win between the pipes for Jacksonville. The Dolphins held Navy to under 10 goals for just the second time this season.

"She stole multiple goals for us today and the impact that she has on us, on and off the field, is tremendous," Singleton said.

Jacksonville set the tone in the first quarter, with sophomores Allyx Berry and Maeve Brennan putting the Dolphins up early in the first. Navy responded with a pair to close the quarter, leaving the teams deadlocked heading into the second. Hagans scored her first of the day to put JU in front, but the Midshipmen scored twice to take their first lead of the game.

Senior attacker Madison Plitt scored her first of the day to tie it up, and after Navy retook the lead, Berry launched a shot from long range to tie the game at five.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter before the Midshipmen took an 8-6 lead late in the third quarter. With the clock ticking down, Brennan found junior attacker Ainsley Scruggs flying towards the crease to bring the Dolphins within one with two seconds left in the quarter. Sophomore attacker Maddie Herman bullied her way to goal and restored Jacksonville's lead in the fourth. Navy answered, but Hagans buried her second of the night to put JU up 9-8.

With just over two minutes to play, the Midshipmen tied the game. As the clock began to tick down and the game looked like it was headed to overtime, Hagans played the hero. She drove through the Navy defense and beat the goalie to put the Dolphins up for good, 10-9.

  • Hodgin's 13 saves are tied for eighth-most in a game in JU history.
Head Coach Tara Singleton
"Our process is just that: a little bit at a time, and finding our footing, finding our identity. I mean, it's indicative when you look at the score line, there's multiple scores, multiple assisters. It's not just about one person. I think the response that we had, even when we were man down, we just had each other's backs. I think for the last two weeks, all we've been talking about is pushing each other, competing to go against ourselves to be our best, and I think that that was what you saw today. We responded every step of the way, and I'm so proud of them."
