Dolphins Turn In Strong Performance at SIRA Regatta

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. --- The Jacksonville men's rowing team competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta this past weekend. The Dolphins had three crews finish in the top three of their events and turned in an overall strong showing.

The Novice 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ each placed well in the opening time trials --- fourth and fifth, respectively --- to set up well for the semifinals. The Varsity 4+ clinched a spot in the semis with a 6:44.154, 13th place finish.

The Varsity 8+ also started strong, finishing fifth with a time of 5:27.813 in the opening time trial. The 2- crew placed fourth to clinch a spot in the A final in the last time trial of the weekend.

The Dolphins rowed well into the semifinals, starting with the Novice 8+. The crew finished second with a time of 6:51.029 to secure their spot in the A final. The Second Varsity 8+ followed suit, finishing third with a 6:33.827 time for a place in the A final.

The Varsity 4+ closed Friday's proceeding with a fourth place time of 7:31.979 to lock in a spot in Saturday's B final.

Seniors Landon and Logan Veal closed out the 2- final with a 7:42.188 time, good for a third-place finish.

The Dolphins reached the podium once again with the Novice 8+, finishing third with a time of 6:29.658. In the Varsity 4+ B final, Jacksonville finished fourth with a time of 7:21.091. That left the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 8+ as the last races of the day for JU.

In the Second Varsity 8+ final, the Dolphins placed sixth with a 6:22.556 time. The Varsity 8+ locked in a fifth-place finish with a 6:06.212.

Head Coach Preston Weinard
"I'm very proud of how our team performed this weekend. It was an edgy week to be a Dolphin, and edge to be a JU Rower too. We had to make some changes after our performance at the Schuylkill last weekend, and with only a few days in Jacksonville before we hit the road again, we made some quick changes to find more speed in all boats. I'm so pleased with the team for coming together during the regatta and putting their best foot forward. There were still many lessons learned during the regatta in terms of racing and more, but I'm grateful for the next three weeks of time to prepare for the Dad Vail Regatta."

Up Next
The Dolphins will hit the road in a few weeks for the Dad Vail Regatta in Pennsauken, New Jersey May 9 and 10. Race times and lineups will be released in the lead up of the event.
