Dolphins Drop Game One Battle to Hatters

DELAND, FL -- Jacksonville Baseball took a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 5-4 to the Stetson Hatters Friday afternoon.

The Dolphins' offense was powered by a standout performance from sophomore Jaden Bastian, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, a walk, and two RBIs, bringing his season total to 10 long balls. Senior Josh Steidl was locked in at the plate as well, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk. Fellow senior Blake DeLamielleure added to the Dolphins' offensive momentum, collecting two hits in four at-bats and driving in a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacksonville jumped out to a fast start, as Bastian launched a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning to give the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead. After Stetson briefly tied it in the second with a sacrifice fly, Bastian struck again in the third with his second long ball of the day, putting JU back in front, 2-1. The two home runs brought his season total to 10, continuing his impressive power display. The Dolphins continued to apply pressure in the inning. DeLamielleure singled home Steidl and later came around to score on a Hatters miscue, extending the Jacksonville lead to 4-1.

On the mound, Richard Long recovered well after surrendering a two-run homer in the third. The Middleburg native settled in and held the Hatters scoreless until the seventh, when a two-out RBI single tied the game at 4-4. Chris Lotito entered in relief and kept Stetson off the board to send the game to the eighth inning.

Despite solid pitching and early offensive firepower, the Dolphins couldn't reclaim the lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Stetson loaded the bases and walked it off with a single up the middle, handing Jacksonville a tough 5-4 loss.
