JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Dolphins are winners of their last four, due in part to three straight wins over West Georgia, capped off by a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon.
Jacy Harrelson and
Margaret Jenkins combined for a shutout while a single from
Lindsey Chadwick and a homer from
Alayna Gaddy saw the 'Phins to victory. The win moved JU to 21-14 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Jacksonville has now won its last two ASUN series.
The sweep was Jacksonville's first since going 3-0 against West Georgia last season.
Jacksonville was well below its 22-run pace from Saturday's pair of games but still did jump ahead in the scoring category early. Chadwick poked a bases loaded single into center field to push JU ahead 1-0 in the first.
In the second, starting just her second game all season, Gaddy added to the home run party from the previous night with her first of the season. In three games against UWG, Jacksonville amassed six homers. The team has 10 home runs total in six games played against the Wolves.
While the Dolphin bats cooled off after the first two frames, Harrelson and Jenkins kept UWG at bay from the circle. Harrelson earned the start and the win (12-6) and went four innings, allowing three hits and striking out a pair. The freshman Jenkins came on for the final three innings, fanning four and allowing just a single hit.
Jacksonville outhit UWG 6-4 by game's end, led by a 2-2 showing from freshman
Jaida Thomas. Thomas was the only player in the game to collect two or more hits.
The Dolphins will parlay their weekend success into another home stand, this time against FGCU. Jacksonville and the Eagles begin play Friday, April 3 starting at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader following on Saturday, April 4.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"The goal is to win the series," head coach
Erica Ayers said. "Great to get the sweep when you have the opportunity. We had a great relief appearance from
Margaret Jenkins. You want your relievers to come in and pound the zone and she did just that."
