JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville baseball battled back from an early deficit but ultimately came up short Monday night, dropping an 11–6 decision to South Florida at John Sessions Stadium.
The Bulls struck quickly in the opening inning, using three hits and a three-run homer from Matt Rose to take a 4–0 lead.
Roger Vergara answered in the bottom half of the first, launching a two-run shot to right field, scoring
Logan Baratta and cutting the deficit in half. The pump was his second of the year and first one at John Sessions.
The Dolphins continued to fight in the second inning, plating three runs to tie the game at five.
Sammy Mummau drove in
Griffin Pomper with an RBI single before Baratta and Vergara each brought runs home later in the frame.
South Florida regained the lead in the third inning with three runs to take an 8–5 lead, and the Bulls slowly added insurance the rest of the way.
Despite the setback, Jacksonville continued to battle offensively throughout the night. Vergara led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while
Abdriel Delgado and Mummau each added multi-hit performances. That's two consecutive multi-hit games for
Abdriel Delgado.
The Dolphins showed resilience late in the game, highlighted by a lengthy nine-pitch at-bat from
Griffin Pomper in the ninth inning as Jacksonville continued to battle until the final out.
On the mound,
Austin Williamson provided strong relief work after entering in the fourth inning, allowing just one run across 3.1 innings while striking out one.
Ayden Phillips also struck out the side once again in his inning of work, while
Scout Updike closed the night on the mound for the Dolphins.
Jacksonville finished the night with nine hits, with six different Dolphins recording a hit.
