Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. — Jacksonville University Baseball fell 8–7 Friday night despite a ninth-inning push and a seven-RBI performance from Dolphin three-hole hitter,
Roger Vergara.
Both teams scratched across two runs in the opening frame, with the Dolphins' equalizer coming on a two-run home run to right-center field from Vergara.
West Georgia answered with a sacrifice fly and a solo homer from Patrick McCullough to take a 4–2 lead after three innings.
Andon Lewis extended the Wolves' advantage in the fifth with a three-run home run, pushing UWG ahead 7–2.
The Dolphins began to chip away in the seventh. After
Blake Edmonds,
Cade Walter and
Logan Baratta loaded the bases, Vergara delivered again, clearing the bases with a double to right field to cut the deficit to two.
West Georgia added an insurance run in the eighth to take an 8–5 lead into the ninth.
Jacksonville mounted one last push in the final frame. With one out and runners on second and third, Vergara lined an RBI single to bring the Dolphins within one and place the tying run on second. However, two JU strikeouts ended the comeback effort as the Wolves held on for the 8–7 victory.
Vergara finished 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, a stolen base and seven RBIs, accounting for all seven Jacksonville runs. The senior's four-hit performance marked his ninth multi-hit game of the season, and he now leads the Dolphins with 25 hits.
Jacksonville used three pitchers in the contest.
Alex Walsh made the start, while
Ben Baker-Livingston and
Dominic Pieto worked in relief.
The Dolphins and Wolves continue the three-game series Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
