FORT MYERS, Fla. – Behind 7.0 shutout innings from
Brendan Holland, Jacksonville clinched the weekend series with a 4-1 win over FGCU on Saturday.
How It Happened
Holland set the tone immediately, striking out three of the four hitters he faced in the first while getting ahead in every count.
Jacksonville showed early competitiveness at the plate, squaring up several balls through the first few innings, but had little to show for it as hard contact consistently found gloves.
The Dolphins broke through in the second when
Sam Grunberg ripped a triple down the right field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Logan Baratta to make it 1-0.
Jacksonville added on in the fifth, taking advantage of an FGCU error. After moving into scoring position,
Sammy Mummau lined a single through the left side to extend the lead to 2-0.
FGCU threatened in the sixth, putting two runners in scoring position with two outs, but
Roger Vergara came up with a gem up the middle, ranging to his right to snag a hard-hit grounder and end the inning, preserving the lead.
The Dolphins broke it open in the eighth.
A leadoff single and a walk put two on before both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Derek Bermudez delivered the key hit, shooting a two-run single through the left side to push the lead to 4-0.
FGCU plated one in the bottom half on a balk, but Jacksonville closed it out without further trouble.
On the Mound
Holland was in control throughout, allowing just four hits across his 7.0 shutout innings while striking out seven.
Ayden Phillips handled the final two innings to secure his second save of the season.
At the Plate
Bermudez: 1-for-4, 2 RBI
Mummau: 2-for-4, RBI
