FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville Baseball dropped the series finale to FGCU on Sunday but secured its second consecutive ASUN series victory.
Jacksonville outscored FGCU 11-9 across the three-game set, highlighting a strong weekend from the pitching staff.
Entering Friday, the Eagles led the ASUN in team batting average and owned the conference's lowest ERA. They were undefeated at home in ASUN play and carried a 15-3 overall home record. The Dolphins' road series win should prove valuable down the stretch.
With Queens run-ruling Stetson on Sunday, Jacksonville now sits fourth in the ASUN's Graphite Division, six games back of first place and two out of second.
JU will face FGCU once more to close the regular season, hosting a three-game series at John Sessions Stadium beginning May 14.
The Dolphins are set to host West Georgia and Queens in April, with road series at UNF and Stetson in May.
How It Happened
In the first,
Sammy Mummau worked a competitive leadoff walk to begin the game. A double play and flyout quickly ended the threat. On the mound,
Kyle Powers made his second career start in a key ASUN matchup.
The left-hander responded with a 1-2-3 first inning, turning it over to the offense.
In the second,
Sam Grunberg led off with a hard-hit single through the left side, but Jacksonville was unable to capitalize.
FGCU broke through in the third, scoring three of its four runs on a three-run homer by Javier Gorostola to left. All three runs were unearned following a two-out throwing error by
Logan Baratta.
Powers, working on a predetermined pitch count, went three innings, allowing four hits and striking out one while taking the loss.
In the fifth,
Abdriel Delgado beat out an infield chopper to first to lead off the inning. Baratta moved him into scoring position with a productive out, but JU could not bring him home.
The Dolphins scored their lone run on a two out rally in the sixth, after
Sammy Mummau singled and reached second, followed by a
Derek Bermudez single to knock him in.
In the seventh, freshman
Griffin Pomper threw out his second runner attempting to steal in as many days.
