JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second straight day, and second time in three games, the Jacksonville Dolphins and Stetson Hatters battled to eight innings. On Sunday, the Dolphins fell just short, losing the series finale with the visitors 5-4.
The loss moved JU to 30-18 overall and 14-7 in ASUN play. Jacksonville went 1-2 with the Hatters prior to the regular season finale against North Florida starting Thursday.
Jacksonville jumped ahead in the third inning behind a pair of RBI-doubles from freshman
Jaida Thomas and graduate
Sarah Beth Brake.
Brake's 49
th RBI of the year placed the graduate transfer in the sole possession of second overall in single-season runs batted in. She trails just Amanda Schmidt's 50 set in 2011 for the all-time record.
From the circle,
Jacy Harrelson kept Stetson at bay until a three-run fifth inning gave the Hatters a one-run lead. Like they had all series, Jacksonville battled back and tacked on another pair of runs in the fifth. Brake cranked a homer followed by an
Emma Mansfield RBI-single to give the 'Phins the lead. Brake's 13 jacks lead the team and are fifth overall in the league.
Stetson jumped ahead with the game-tying run in the seventh and knocked one around in the eighth to take the lead and eventually the game.
Brake and Mansfield were second on the team with two hits each, part of a 10-hit afternoon for the 'Phins. Freshman
Jaida Thomas led the charge with a 3-4 showing, collecting one RBI and a triple. Thomas leads the entire ASUN in triples with seven.
Harrelson went seven innings from the circle, fanning eight for her second straight game with eight or more Ks.
Reese Wells came on in extras.
The attention now turns to the River City Rumble, where JU and UNF will battle for three straight days for Duval County bragging rights. The 'Phins took the earlier River City Rumble meeting 2-1 and will look to make it a season sweep starting Thursday, April 30
