Alex Walsh Named ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year; Six Dolphins Earn All-Academic Honors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — For the second straight season, Jacksonville Baseball has produced the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as Alex Walsh earned the conference's top academic honor. The Dolphins also placed six student-athletes on the Academic All-ASUN Team, the most selections in program history.

Walsh has been exemplary on the mound and in the classroom for the Dolphins. The senior finance major finished with a 3.93 GPA, the highest among Jacksonville's undergraduate student-athletes, and was recognized as a Davis College of Business Top 25 Honorable Mention. He was also honored with JU's Debbie and Fred Pruitt Student-Athlete of the Year award at the 2026 Jaxpys.

The southpaw from Boynton Beach anchored a Jacksonville pitching staff that finished the regular season with the third-lowest ERA in the ASUN. Walsh recorded seven wins on the mound, tied for the second-most in the conference, including multiple conference victories over Stetson and West Georgia, along with a key road win at UAB earlier in the year. He joins Dan Gulbransen (2012) and Richard Long (2025) as the third Dolphin to earn the honor.

Derek Bermudez earned Academic All-ASUN honors after posting a 3.72 cumulative GPA while majoring in Sports in Society. The redshirt junior registers as an academic senior and has been one of Jacksonville's top offensive contributors this season, leading the Dolphins in RBI (49) and home runs (9).

Fellow senior Sam Grunberg earned a 3.84 cumulative GPA in Sport in Society. The Lindenwood transfer has been a veteran presence on the roster while starting 47 of Jacksonville's 53 games at first base.

Junior Kyle Powers has been named to the list after carrying a 3.89 GPA in Accounting with a minor in Art and was also recognized as a University Honors Student. Powers has provided valuable innings on the mound throughout the season for the Dolphins.

Archer Ogbourne, a junior Sports Business major, posted a 3.89 cumulative GPA to earn Academic All-ASUN recognition. Ogbourne appeared in 40 games for Jacksonville this season, primarily in the outfield.

Graduate student Dom Pieto earned the highest GPA among Jacksonville's selections, recording a 3.95 GPA while pursuing his Master's in Applied Business Analytics. Pieto has been one of Jacksonville's most dependable bullpen arms this season, collecting seven saves while serving as the Dolphins' closer.

Alex Walsh, Derek Bermudez, Sam Grunberg, Kyle Powers, Archer Ogbourne and Dom Pieto each earned Academic All-ASUN recognition after meeting the conference's criteria of maintaining a cumulative GPA above 3.50 while appearing in at least 50 percent of the team's contests throughout the season.

The record-setting amount of nominations comes after Jacksonville Baseball posted its highest team GPA in program history this season, finishing with a 3.54 cumulative GPA.
