JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Jacksonville women's basketball head coach
Special Jennings will be joining the staff of the Bahamas Senior Women's National Team this summer for the 2027 FIBA Women's Americup Centrobasket Qualifier.
Jennings will be an assistant under former JU head coach and current Ole Miss coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin.
"I'm excited to welcome Special to our staff for this year's CentroBasket Tournament. She is a proven winner who brings tremendous value through her basketball IQ, scouting expertise, X's and O's, and commitment to player development," McPhee-McCuin said. "Beyond her knowledge of the game, she is an outstanding teammate whose energy and professionalism elevate everyone around her. We're fortunate to have her with us, and I'm confident she will play an important role as we compete to earn a spot in the 2027 AmeriCup."
McPhee-McCuin and Jennings have a long history beyond their ties to JU, and now they will join forces as the Bahamas seeks to clinch a spot in the upcoming FIBA Women's Americup next year.
Formerly known as the FIBA Women's Centrobasket Championship, the tournament consists of eight countries from Central America and the Caribbean. The top three finishers will qualify for the 2027 FIBA Women's Americup hosted next summer in El Salvador.
Jennings and the Bahamas will travel to the Alexis Argüello Sports Complex in Managua, Nicaragua, for the tournament that will run from July 12-18. The tournament features three group stage games then a knockout tournament.
The Bahamas will open its qualification campaign July 12 against the Dominican Republic. In the following two days, it will face the hosts Nicaragua and Mexico. From there the knockout bracket starts, culminating in the championship on July 18.
This is not Jennings first experience with international basketball. Prior to her time at JU, Jennings was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2023 Nike Hoops Summit.
