Advising Information

Each NCAA team is assigned a member of the Student-Athlete Services staff to meet with throughout their tenure at Jacksonville University. In addition to the Athletic Academic Advisor, each student-athlete has a JU Academic Advisor within their declared major department. The Student-Athlete Services staff serve as an additional support network, coordinating and implementing developmental programs geared toward the academic, personal, and professional needs of each student-athlete. In cooperation with the Office of the Registrar, the department of Student-Athlete Services and the Faculty Advisors aid in the assurance that NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations are followed.

Priority Registration

At the start of a student-athletes second semester of full-time enrollment, student-athletes listed on the team’s certified eligibility roster receive priority registration. When student-athletes register early, class and practice conflicts can be minimized. Student-athletes must follow all registration procedures set forth by the Office of the Registrar and Student-Athlete Services.

Tutoring

Student-Athlete Services partners with the Academic Support Center (ASC), located on the 3rd floor of Swisher Library, allowing for a very active tutoring program with the goal of providing student-athletes with the best possible course specific assistance. The Academic Support Center provides tutors covering the majority of the academic areas offered at Jacksonville University. If, on the rare occasion, an ASC tutor is needed in a subject not currently covered, the best effort is made to hire an additional tutor to fit the specific academic need. Individual as well as small group tutoring is available to all student-athletes. All tutoring sessions are to be conducted at the Academic Support Center.

Student-athletes are encouraged to book tutors, with the assistance of their Athletic Academic Advisor. Students can now book 1-on-1 appointments at any time, via the MyJU Tutor Appointments app. Student-Athletes who utilize tutoring as a means to complete Success Tables hours are to have the tutor fill out a voucher and then submit that voucher to their respective Athletic Academic Advisor. Tutoring sessions serve as a review and further explanation of material covered in class, not as a substitution for class attendance. All tutoring services are provided at no cost to all student-athletes.

Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)

The purpose of AEP is to provide comprehensive and progressive services and resources to student-athletes. AEP enables JU’s student-athletes to balance the demands of academics and athletics. The program seeks to promote excellence, enhance retention and increase graduation rates among student-athletes.

All first semester student-athletes identified by Student-Athlete Services and their respective coaching staff, returning student-athletes with a cumulative GPA below a 2.25, and returning student-athletes identified by Student-Athlete Services and their respective coaching staff are included in the AEP makeup.

The overall plan for AEP is to provide in-depth academic monitoring, individualized Study Tables, academic projection, and learning strategies for student-athletes in need of additional assistance. In doing so, the Athletic Academic Advisors work with the members of AEP to develop an Academic Scouting Report, requiring them to review their semester schedule and identify potential courses of difficulty. Following the development of the Academic Scouting Report, the student-athlete and Athletic Academic Advisor create a Game Plan, defining the strategies and tactics needed to be successful and triumphant in the classroom.

Book Library

In order to provide additional support to JU’s student-athletes, Student-Athlete Services has created a Book Library. The Book Library is located within the Student-Athlete Center for Success, allowing student-athletes to access course books for academic study purposes while at Success Tables.

Rental Laptops

Student-Athlete Services keeps at least 5 laptops in inventory for the entire year.  Student-athletes are allowed to check out a laptop, by completing a check-out form.  Laptops must be returned by the specified time on the check-out form. Rentable laptops are available on a first come, first serve basis.
