Weekend Wrap-Up
The Dolphins began the 2018 campaign taking two of three games in a weekend series against #22 West Virginia at John Sessions Stadium. In a series led by pitching, JU starting pitchers took home the win in both victories, with the staff combining for a weekend ERA of 2.67. The Dolphins rode a one-hitter to a series win in Sunday's rubber match, with SP Mike Cassala taking the win in six innings of one-hit ball, and freshman reliever Chris Mauloni taking care of business to record a three-inning save.
On-Deck Circle
- Sophomore RHP Tyler Santana earned ASUN Picher of the Week after he went seven innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out a career high seven in earning the win in his collegiate starting debut Saturday.
- RHP Nathan Disch makes his first start since Mar. 28, 2017 at UCF. The redshirt-senior from Appleton, Wis. had shoulder surgery and missed the second half of last season, but made his season debut on Friday night, pitching two innings of two-hit, no-run relief.
- SS Scott Dubrule had a hit in all three games this weekend, and recorded multiple base knocks on Friday (2) and Sunday (3).
- JU went 1-1 vs. Bethune-Cookman last season, dropping a 5-4 contest on the road Mar. 1, then dominating the rematch 24-9 at home Apr. 5. The run total was the highest for the Dolphins in a single game in 26 years.
- The Wildcats are the second of six teams that qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament that the Dolphins face this season. The list includes National Champion #1 Florida and Super Regional participant #5 Florida State.
Scouting Bethune-Cookman
- After advancing to its first-ever NCAA Regional Championship game and losing just six seniors and an MLB draft pick from the roster, Bethune-Cookman began 2018 by dropping two of three games in a road series at Mercer. After falling in the first two contests, BCU bounced back on Sunday afternoon, plating three runs in the ninth inning to win 8-6.
- Sunday's win was the first for rookie Wildcat skipper, Barrett Shaft, who was promoted in November 2017, following the departure of six-year Head Coach Jason Beverlin.
- Bethune-Cookman returned the majority of its starters from a successful 2017 season, including 2017 Freshman All-American pitcher Anthony Maldonaldo. The rising sophomore joined junior first-baseman Danny Rodriguez in earning a spot on the MEAC Preseason Honor Roll. The two were named the conference's Preseason Pitcher and Player of the year, respectively, while the team was picked to win the conference in the upcoming season.
