JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville University Baseball made its mark on the 2026 ASUN postseason awards, as eight Dolphins earned recognition across the conference's all-conference teams, highlighted by
Sammy Mummau being named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year.
Mummau becomes just the second Dolphin in program history to earn the award, joining former Jacksonville shortstop Dakota Julylia, who was honored in 2019 under head coach
Chris Hayes.
Roger Vergara landed on the All-ASUN First Team after putting together one of the most consistent offensive seasons in the conference.
Brendan Holland earned Second Team All-ASUN recognition following a breakout campaign on the mound, while
Alex Walsh and
Conner Spelman were both selected to the All-ASUN Third Team.
Jacksonville's freshman class was also heavily represented, as
Logan Baratta,
Cade Walter,
Ayden Phillips and
Kyle Hopper were each named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. The four selections are the most in program history for the Dolphins.
Sammy Mummau Named ASUN Defensive Player of the Year
After taking a major leap during his second season in Jacksonville,
Sammy Mummau has been named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year.
The Florida transfer became a steady presence in the middle of the diamond for the Dolphins this spring. Anyone who watches him play knows he has a knack for making difficult plays look routine. Mummau finished the regular season with 130 assists, the fourth-most in the ASUN, while posting a .961 fielding percentage at shortstop. He also turned 17 double plays on the year.
His growth defensively was noticeable from a season ago, improving his fielding percentage from .937 to one of the top marks among ASUN shortstops in 2026. The junior also made major strides offensively, raising his batting average nearly 100 points from .189 to .285.
One of the defining moments of Mummau's season came against his former team, when he recorded the final out in Jacksonville's first upset victory over Florida earlier this spring. The former Brooks Wallace Award Watchlist member's rapid development on both sides of the ball has already earned him conference recognition early in his career, making his potential over the next two seasons even more exciting for the Dolphins.
Roger Vergara Named First Team All-ASUN
From the moment
Roger Vergara stepped onto the field in a Dolphin uniform, he quickly became one of the most consistent hitters in the ASUN. The everyday second baseman earned First Team All-ASUN honors after putting together one of the best offensive seasons by a Dolphin in recent years.
Vergara wasted no time settling in, opening the season on a seven-game hitting streak while going 8-for-12 in his first 12 at-bats at Jacksonville. The senior went on to record a hit in 42 of Jacksonville's 53 games this season, including both an eight-game and 10-game hitting streak during the year.
The infielder finished the regular season leading the Dolphins in batting average (.329), hits (70) and at-bats (213), while striking out just 22 times all season. His 70 hits were 19 more than any other Dolphin, while also finishing near the top of the roster in doubles (8), home runs (6) and stolen bases (8). Vergara also started every game at second base, turning 17 double plays alongside
Sammy Mummau in the middle infield.
Vergara delivered some of Jacksonville's biggest moments throughout the season. In game one against West Georgia, he went 4-for-5 with seven RBI, accounting for every Dolphin run scored in the victory. He also delivered the game-tying hit in Jacksonville's upset win over Florida, the go-ahead hit in the extra-innings win over UCF and launched a home run in the road victory over UAB.
The senior recorded three four-hit games and 18 multi-hit performances during the 2026 campaign. His selection marks the second straight season Jacksonville has placed a player on the First Team All-ASUN list and the 12th First Team selection under head coach
Chris Hayes.
Brendan Holland Earns Second Team All-ASUN Honors
After emerging as one of the anchors of Jacksonville's rotation throughout the 2026 season,
Brendan Holland earned Second Team All-ASUN recognition.
The graduate transfer turned in one of the strongest seasons on the mound in the conference, leading the Dolphins in ERA (3.58), innings pitched (70.1) and strikeouts (77), while tying for the team lead in starts with 14. Holland also collected four wins during the season.
One of the defining stretches of Holland's season came in the middle of ASUN play, when he earned ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors following a dominant outing in Jacksonville's series-clinching win over FGCU on April 11. In the road victory, Holland tossed seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out seven. The honor marked the first ASUN Pitcher of the Week selection for a Dolphin since the 2023 season.
Later in the year, Holland etched his name into the program record book during Jacksonville's win over Queens on April 25, becoming just the 10th Dolphin in program history to record 12 strikeouts in a game. The UMASS-Lowell transfer will look to continue his momentum heading into the ASUN Tournament.
Alex Walsh, Conner Spelman Earn Third Team All-ASUN Honors
After earning ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier today, and JU's Student Athlete of the Year,
Alex Walsh added another honor to his 2026 campaign, being named to the All-ASUN Third Team.
The left-hander turned in a stellar regular season at the front of Jacksonville's rotation, finishing tied for second in the ASUN with seven wins while ranking near the top of the Dolphins' staff in innings pitched, strikeouts and ERA. Walsh made 14 starts during the regular season and struck out 69 batters across 68.2 innings of work.
One of Walsh's best outings of the year came on April 24 against Queens, when he earned ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors after allowing just one hit across six shutout innings while striking out eight in a Dolphins victory. Earlier in the season, Walsh also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts against Queens, becoming one of the top swing-and-miss arms in the conference throughout the spring.
The senior Ace has collected an extensive list of accolades during his two years with the Dolphins and looks to add a conference championship to that ledger.
Conner Spelman, the preseason All-ASUN select, also earned Third Team All-ASUN recognition as the captain behind the plate.
The Oviedo native finished the regular season with the second-highest batting average among qualified Dolphin hitters at .310, marking the second straight season he hit above .300 after batting .302 a year ago. Spelman also led Jacksonville in OPS (.878), slugging percentage (.487) and doubles (9), while adding three home runs during the 2026 campaign.
One of the hottest hitters on the roster throughout the second half of the season, Spelman recently saw an 11-game hitting streak come to an end. The junior catcher also recorded nine multi-hit games this spring, including a three-hit performance capped off by a walk-off hit to clinch Jacksonville's series victory over FGCU this past weekend.
Behind the plate, Spelman continued to impact the game defensively as well, throwing out eight runners attempting to steal during the season.
Dolphins Place Program-Record Four on ASUN All-Freshman Team
Jacksonville's freshman class made a major impact throughout the 2026 season, as
Logan Baratta,
Cade Walter,
Ayden Phillips and
Kyle Hopper were all named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. The four selections are the most in program history for the Dolphins.
Logan Baratta started all but one game for Jacksonville during his freshman campaign, quickly becoming one of the Dolphins' most reliable run producers at third base. Baratta finished the regular season with 48 hits, eight doubles, three triples and 29 RBI. Not too shabby for a freshman season.
The rookie delivered several big moments during ASUN play, including a walk-off double against West Georgia that secured the series victory for Jacksonville. He also turned in a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI in the Dolphins' series-clinching win over Queens and launched a home run during Jacksonville's road trip to Stetson last weekend.
Cade Walter adds to the list after he earned All-Freshman Team recognition after becoming one of Jacksonville's most electric players during his first collegiate season. Walter started all but one game for the Dolphins, finishing with the team lead in stolen bases (13), while ranking near the top of the roster in OPS (.826), runs scored (40) and doubles (8).
The freshman wasted no time making an impact at the college level, homering in his first collegiate at-bat before launching a grand slam later in the same inning. Later in the season, Walter opened Jacksonville's matchup against Florida State with a home run on the first pitch of the game.
Walter also put together a nine-game hitting streak during the middle of the season and was hit by pitch 24 times, the third-most in the ASUN. Defensively, the freshman earned national attention after making SportsCenter's Top 10 plays with a highlight-reel catch against North Florida.
While still younger than 20 years old, the freshman has already delivered several larger-than-life moments in just one season with the Dolphins.
Ayden Phillips also earned All-Freshman Team honors after emerging as one of Jacksonville's most reliable bullpen arms throughout the 2026 season. The right-hander from Columbia High School finished the regular season with the lowest ERA on the team at 2.74, while posting a 3-1 record with 23 strikeouts across 23 innings pitched. Phillips allowed just 16 hits during the year.
The righty delivered several important outings during conference play, including closing the door in Jacksonville's upset victory over UCF earlier this season. During a dominant stretch in March, the freshman struck out the side in three consecutive appearances. He also contributed offensively in limited opportunities, recording a pinch-hit double in one of his three at-bats during the season.
Kyle Hopper rounded out Jacksonville's All-Freshman Team selections after taking on bigger innings throughout the second half of the season. The Atlantic Beach native finished the regular season with a 4-1 record, tied for the second-most wins on the team, while posting a 4.43 ERA across 22.1 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts.
Hopper earned his first collegiate victory in Jacksonville's midweek win over Bethune-Cookman before later collecting his second career win in the Dolphins' upset over No. 21 Florida. The freshman continued to provide valuable innings down the stretch as Jacksonville pushed toward the postseason.
In total, Jacksonville placed eight student-athletes across the ASUN's postseason teams, capping off a regular season that saw the Dolphins battle their way back into the conference tournament picture following one of the strongest second-half stretches in the league. The honors reflect a team that got production from every level of the roster, from veteran leaders and key transfers to a freshman class that made an immediate impact all season long.
The fifth-seeded Dolphins take on Austin Peay tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Melching Field.
