Dolphins Lose Steam After Promising First Half

Box Score

DeLand, Fla. - Jacksonville women's basketball (12-13, 5-7 ASUN) led the Stetson Hatters (13-11, 8-2 ASUN) for 29 minutes of Tuesday's game before surrendering the lead in the fourth quarter. Up by as many as 13 in the game, Jacksonville eventually fell by a score of 54-46.

Jacksonville had the hot hand in the first quarter. They hit five of their first seven attempts and put together an 8-0 scoring run to kick things off. Meanwhile, Jacksonville held the Hatters scoreless on their first four attempts and forced seven first quarter turnovers. The Dolphins led by a score of 17-4 at one point and shot 57.1 percent during the first 10 minutes.

Jacksonville's scoring efforts slowed in the second quarter, grabbing just two points in the first four minutes. With six minutes left in the first half, Jasmyn Brown hit a pair of buckets back-to-back to regain a double-digit lead. Though they were outscored 13-12 in the second, the Dolphins still managed to knock down 46.2 percent of their shots and carried a 29-22 lead into halftime.

Stetson opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer that cut the Dolphins' lead to four. It was the first of three they'd sink over the next 10 minutes. JU was successful on just 2-of-12 attempts for seven points in the third quarter, but remained in the driver seat until Stetson hit a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired to knot things up at 36-all.

A minute into the fourth quarter the Hatters grabbed their first lead of the game. The Dolphins quickly evened it up again, but Stetson hit a triple with 6:48 remaining and wouldn't relinquish the lead again. It was the sixth consecutive win for the third place Hatters.

Brown led the Dolphins in scoring with nine points, all of which came during the first two quarters. Trudy Walker hauled in double-digit rebounds for a third consecutive game and a 15th time this season. The senior out of Fort Pierce, Fla. also recorded five steals, six points, and an assist. Shalonda Neely scored eight points to go with a block.

Next, Jacksonville takes a seven-day hiatus before returning home for the River City Rumble next Tuesday. The Dolphins already claimed the first meeting with North Florida, a back-and-forth 80-72 win on Jan. 12. Tuesday's game tips off at 7 PM and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
