GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Jacksonville University men's golf team impressed again this week, finishing in a tie for third at the ECU Intercollegiate among yet another loaded field. Highlighting the effort was sophomore Michael Sakane who took home the first individual crown of his young career after posting a -7, 209 to finish three strokes clear of second.

Sakane's week began with a +1, 73 in the opening round on Monday morning but he thrust himself into contention with a -6, 65 in round two. He then fired off five birdies, three on the back nine including each of his last two holes to post a final round 71 and secure the victory. He was one of just two players in the field to go under par for the event.

Sakane is already the third different Dolphin to secure a top spot in a field this spring but the first to win outright. Thomas Thurloway shared the crown at the Seminole Intercollegiate at the end of February and Eduardo Carrete shared the title through 54 holes at the Sea Best Invitational before losing a three-way playoff to break the tie.

Speaking of Carrete, he was strong once again, posting a +7, 223 to finish in a tie for 15th overall. Thurloway was dominant and in contention through 36 holes (73-71, T4) but a final round 81 dropped him into a tie for 19th overall. Aaeri Krishnan supported the cause with a +14, 230 to close in a tie for 34th.

The Dolphins will be back in familiar territory for its next event, the John Hayt Intercollegiate at Sawgrass CC in Ponte Vedra Beach. That event gets started with 36 holes on Sunday, Mar. 31 and wraps up with 18 holes on Monday, Apr. 1. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.
