Men’s Golf Secures Highest Team Finish Of Season

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Jacksonville Dolphins took home their best team finish of the season Tuesday, earning fourth place overall in the UNCW Seahawk Invitational.

The Dolphins carded a +1 over two days of play in Wilmington, finishing just behind third place VCU (-2), 26th ranked Duke (-9) and host UNCW (-14). Jacksonville finished ahead of ASUN foes Stetson and North Florida. Leading the 'Phins was Mexican national Daniel Montalvo who finished T3 in the field. Montalvo carded a -4, tied with a student-athlete from UNCW for the third best tournament overall in the field.

Montalvo's T-3 finish was the best individual finish by a Dolphin golfer all season. He also finished ahead of three nationally ranked golfers, including the NCAA's sixth-ranked player from Duke.

The senior started tournament play at the Country Club of Landfall with a one-under 71 outing, securing three birdies. His birdies were part of a 20-birdie opening round for the Dolphins with Will Harris earning five birdies. Andrew Morgan carded the best round of the day and the tournament with a four-under 68.

During the second round, Montalvo led the squad with a three-under 69 showing, earning six birdies. He was the only Dolphin under par and led the team in overall birdies during the round. Evan Ryanor was second on the score sheet with an even par 72 on the scorecard.

On the second and final day of play, Montalvo shot even par with three birdies and an eagle on the Par 5 14th hole. Montalvo and Evan Raynor both eagled the 14th to help stave off a late push by Stetson and hold on to the fourth spot in the team standings

Montalvo went -3 on the 14th hole over the course of three rounds. Jacksonville carded just a single bogey to go with two eagles, five birdies and seven pars on the hole.

Behind Montalvo in the individual rankings was Brandon Lohr who finished out with a +1 score and a 16th overall finish. Lohr shot rounds of 73 (+1), 73 (+1) and 71 (-1) to earn his spot in the Top 20. The finish was Lohr's third straight top-30 finish and fourth top-20 finish of the season. Lohr finished his time in the Tar Heel State with 12 birdies.

All five Dolphins who competed in the Seahawk Invitational finished in the Top 50, as Harris secured 44th place and both Raynor and Morgan earned T-49 spots. Harris shot a +7 score for the tournament, just ahead of the +8 scores carded by Raynor and Morgan.

Jacksonville has three top-8 finishes this season, earning seventh in the West Bay College Invitational hosted by FGCU and fifth in the Florida Atlantic Invitational, both back in October.

The program has just one more regular season tournament before the ASUN Championship in late April. JU will travel to Richmond to take on the Giles-Sprately Collegiate hosted by Richmond University April 6-7.
