Women's Rowing Captures Second Place at MAAC Championship

PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The Jacksonville University women's rowing team faced some adversity this weekend at the 2019 MAAC Championship but battled through it to a second-place finish. The Dolphins had won five-consecutive conference titles.

All three Dolphin boats advanced to the Grand Final of their events and things got started on a high note with the Varsity 4 picking up a win in 7:58.285, positioning the team in first place out of the gates. The 2nd Varsity Eight was next to hit the water and that crew closed in second behind Marist in 7:18.529 setting one race for the title in the 1st Varsity Eight Grand Final. Marist held a one-point advantage entering the event making it a winner-take-all scenario.

Marist jumped ahead early and held off the charging Dolphin boat to claim the crown. Jacksonville's best finished that race in 6:56.880.

"I give credit to what Marist accomplished today," head coach Mike Lane said. "Clearly, they wanted to win more than we did, and it was impressive to watch them perform. I wish coach Sanford and the Marist women the best of luck at NCAA's!"

Jacksonville ultimately landed three individuals on the All-MAAC First Team; Delaney Plunkett, Madison Boyer and Meg Coyle. Joining them on the All-MAAC Second Team was Kaylyn Tracey and Sara Miller. The Dolphins also had 13 student-athletes recognized on the All-Academic Team; Maddie Black, Madison Boyer, Melanie Carter, Meg Coyle, Ciara Devenuto-Wyeth, Stephanie Dilani, Leah Finsie, Gabi Heard, Sara Miller, Emily Muller, Emma Napper, Meredith Sprague and Marlena Warren.

"I was ultimately disappointed in our performance today," Lane concluded. "We faced a very challenging situation when our trailer got in a wreck on the way to the Championship and caused both of our eights to be un-rowable. This was very much a distraction however we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to race. That being said, this is not an excuse, we just didn't execute the race we had planned and hoped for."
