GAINESVILLE, Ga. --- The 50th season of Jacksonville Women's Rowing has been one of the best in the program's history, and the Dolphins capped it off in style with one of their greatest showings at the NCAA Championship Regatta.
On the waters of Lake Lanier, Jacksonville tied its best-ever points tally at the NCAA Championships, with the Varsity Four and second Varsity Eight tying the best finishes in program history.
"Tying the most points we've ever had here at the NCAA championship was it as a huge accomplishment and to see these guys run with some of the best programs in the country Is really a huge testament to their effort hard work that they put in this entire year," said head coach and director of rowing
Mike Lane. "This program is just beginning to reset the standard as we try to take things to an ever higher level with huge aspirations next season."
The Varsity Four were JU's top finishers for the weekend, placing second in their final for a 20th overall finish. This is the second Jacksonville boat to defeat two schools head-to-head in the NCAA Championships.
Jacksonville posted a time of 07:15.023 to secure the finish. The Dolphins defeated crews from UMass and Rhode Island in the final. Before Sunday's final, the Varsity Four rowed a 07:30.026 in the opening heat and a 07:27.253, third-place finish in the semi-final.
The second Varsity Eight also took a head-to-head victory in their final, placing ahead of UMass with a time of 06:33.204. JU opened the week with a 06:43.802 time-trial finish, then worked a 06:52.323 semi-final time before turning in its fastest time of the weekend in the final.
The first Varsity Eight rowed a 06:36.510 in the opening heat, before turning in a 06:36.167, fourth-place finish in the semi-finals. In Sunday's final, the Dolphins rowed their fastest time of the weekend, 06:23.672.
All three crews posted the fastest recorded times in an NCAA Final in program history as Jacksonville continues to elevate its standard against the best crews in the country.
